There is actually a very tiny amount of carbon dioxide in the air that we breathe however, larger quantities of it are toxic to us. This is simply because our bodies have evolved to use the oxygen in the air to live. We are very lucky that trees and plants love carbon dioxide so they will use it to make food and then they will give out oxygen, so we owe a lot to the trees and plants!
