Sandstone is formed when other rocks are eroded or broken down into smaller pieces by the action of the wind or ice or water. These little broken pieces of rock are usually moved about in rivers, in the ocean or in the air before they settle somewhere. Then the pieces, which are grains of sand get buried and compacted and over time turned to rock, sandstone!
